Donate Your Car - Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I contact someone to donate my car?

Complete our secure online donation form, or contact Paula Roth at Colorado Public Television:
  • By phone at (303) 296-1212 (or toll-free at 1 (800) 727-8812)
  • By e-mail

What can I donate?

Colorado Public Television accepts almost all vehicles from cars, vans, trucks, SUV's, RV's, motorcycles to boats with trailers. We can even accept riding mowers, tractors, snowmobiles and wave runners. Just call and ask. We want to give you the opportunity to donate whatever you have.

Can I donate a vehicle that is not running?

We do accept non-running vehicles, however we do have a few limitations on vehicles outside the Denver Metro area. Please call to determine if we can accept your vehicle. If you complete the online donation form, we will verify acceptance when we call you.

Do I need a title to my vehicle?

Yes. We must have a Certificate of Title with your name printed in the Owner's Section.

If you do not have a title, you can take your ID, an old registration or insurance card to your County Department of Motor Vehicles and get a duplicate title. They should be able to print a title while you wait.

Do I pay for the tow?

No, that is paid by Colorado Public Television. Please have your vehicle, keys and signed title ready when your vehicle is scheduled for pick up.

How is my vehicle picked up and how long does it take?

Vehicles are picked up on whatever day works best of you. Even on weekends if necessary! We do not drive the vehicles. Vehicles are generally towed. You do not need to be present at the time of pickup if proper arrangements are made.

What happens to my vehicle after I donate it?

Colorado Public Television does not sell your vehicle directly since we are not a dealer. Cars for Colorado, our partner in vehicle donations, will pick up your vehicle and give you a receipt. Each vehicle is evaluated and sent to a vehicle auction, specialty wholesaler or retailer, recycler or otherwise sold. A portion of the money collected from the sale of your vehicle goes directly to Colorado Public Television.

What kind of deduction will I get?

As of January, 2005 you may deduct the full sale price of your car. This greatly simplifies the process for you, because you no longer have to research and estimate the fair market value of the vehicle, saving you both time and the risk of overstating the value on your tax return.

When you donate your car to Colorado Public Television, you'll get a receipt at the time we pick up the vehicle. Then we will send you a second receipt as soon as the car is sold, letting you know the exact sale price. That amount is your tax deduction.

I have questions that aren't covered here – what should I do?

You can call Paula Roth at (303) 296-1212 (or toll-free at 1 (800) 727-8812) during regular business hours (9-5pm Monday through Friday) for more answers.
